Introduction To Timothy Conway:
Timothy Conway received his Bachelors degree in Religious Studies at U.C. Santa Cruz and his Masters and Doctorate at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He teaches classes on spirituality at Pacifica Graduate Institute, Antioch University and Santa Barbara City College.
Timothy Conway is best known for his book “Women of Power & Grace: Nine Astonishing, Inspiring Luminaries of Our Time” (Santa Barbara: The Wake Up Press 1995), which discussed the lives of Frances Cabrini, Therese Neumann, Pelagia, Maria Skobtsova, Hazrat Babajan, Anandamayi Ma, Anasuya Devi, Shyama Ma and Ammachi Amritanandamayi Ma.
Timothy Conway is married to Laura Conway and is a self-publisher through a small, family-owned press called “Wake Up Press”:

Timothy Conway is a disciple of Nisargadatta Maharaj and is also the webmaster for the enlightened-spirituality.org website, which he dubiously and subjectively called “one of the internet’s biggest and best sites on spirituality”. The Enlightened Spirituality website is composed of only 86 webpages in total (including 7 test pages) and is entirely self-promoting.
Timothy Conway And The Indian Guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba:
Timothy Conway has a long history with the Indian Guru, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Timothy Conway attended Sathya Sai Baba centers in Los Angeles from 1978-1980 and in San Francisco from 1979-1987. He remained a Sai Devotee until 2001, at which time he defected from the Sai Movement due to sexual abuse allegations made against the Guru. Timothy Conway was the president for the San Francisco Sai Baba Center from 1981-1984 and served as liason-officer for the Sathya Sai Baba Council of America for Northern California.
Timothy Conway now believes that Sathya Sai Baba is a fake and a fraud despite the fact that both Barry Pittard and Robert Priddy (very vocal ex-devotees) still believe that Sai Baba possesses genuine paranormal powers. Timothy Conway also cited copies to the alleged Hislop Letters that he claimed he received “mid- or latter-1980s” and did absolutely nothing about until after his defection. Timothy Conway also argued his case based on The Findings and the Secret Swami Program. Like other Ex-Devotees, Timothy Conway misrepresented Alaya Rahm’s Failed Lawsuit Against The Sathya Sai Baba Society Of America.
Timothy Conway is adept in peddling unverifiable rumors, gossip and hearsay as the truth. To Date: Sathya Sai Baba and the Sai Organization have never (ever) been charged with any crime, sexual or otherwise. To Date: Timothy Conway has not assisted even one alleged victim to file a court case against Sai Baba in a court of law in India even though he can often be seen making vociferous demands for justice and hear-wrenching cries about his “legal duty”.
Timothy Conway, Ammachi & Guruphiliac Jody Radzik:
Basking in his self-promotion, Timothy Conway (who thoroughly eulogizes, promotes and worships Ammachi as a bona-fide Guru) cited Guruphiliac Jody Radzik on his enlightened-spirituality.org website as a notable person who endorsed him. Timothy Conway duplicated the following comments from Jody Radzik’s blogged article entitled “Conway’s Way Is No Con”:
“Timothy [has] got a slew of good stuff up at his Enlightened-Spirituality.org, including a nice little bit about the importance of critical thinking, the precious water and commodity that’s sorely lacking in the infernal desert of ignorance known as New Age spirituality in the West.... It’s good to see someone out there upholding the legacies of Shankara and Vivekananda, especially in these days of enlightenment pyramid scams and lame-brained channelling schemes designed to separate the psychologically needy from their dollars in exchange for a boatload of false hope and occluding nonsense about the truth of the Self. So give Enlightened-Spirituality.org a go when you’ve got a minute and the desire to cleanse your palate of all the superstitious nonsense that chokes the truth right out of spiritual culture in these times. --Jody, creator of the popular and controversial Guruphiliac blog at guruphiliac.blogspot.com.”

Timothy Conway promotes Jody Radzik (a known basher and trasher of Ammachi) on his “spiritual” website. Jody Radzik’s critiques on Ammachi can be found here. As a matter of fact, Jody Radzik accused Ammachi of being:
- “Greedy”
- Money-hungry (or as Jody puts it, a “money-grubber”)
- A “Hindu Nazi”
- The “Al Qaeda Of India”
- Creator of “Goonsgate”
- The “Mistress Of The Hindu Right”
- A “foaming-at-the-mouth radical nationalist”
- Being allied with “people and goals of the radical, racist, Hindu nationalist right”
- Somehow involved with “murders” of “mysterious circumstances” at her ashram
- Enmeshed in an “Amma ‘Sex Scandal’”
- Involved in a “Mind-Control TV Network” through Amma TV
- Involved with “global domination”
- Manipulative and weakening devotees minds with her “astral breast milk”
- A rip off who “offer mammaries full of occluding nonsense to a world rife with infantilism”
- The slurs go on and on...
As a matter of fact, Guruphiliac Jody Radzik made the following composite image of Amma (see how it is used on his blog here), merging her face with Osama Bin Laden (the image links directy to Radzik’s atman.net website: Ref):

This is the type of hate that Timothy Conway promotes on his “biggest and best site on spirituality”. Poor Timothy Conway. His research into the notable people he cites on his behalf is as thorough as his lamentable research into the Sai Controversy. Attempting to bolster his illustrious reputation (sarcasm implied) Timothy Conway cited Jody Radzik (a promoter of raves and illegal psychedelic drugs) on his behalf. Not only does Jody Radzik bash Ammachi, he also bashes and lies about other Gurus as well. Timothy Conway promotes a man who claims he is self-realized, needs “to be stoned ALL the time”, is Kali Ma’s “sex slave” and hears the voice of Kali Ma in his head. Nice friend you got there, Tim.
This information is going to be very disconcerting to all the Amma devotees who can often be seen citing the following quote (from Timothy Conway) describing Ammachi as:
“one of the most glorious lights to appear in the history of religion. Just her stamina - embracing these millions of people one by one, day after day, without a break, all over the world-is some kind of divine gift. No mere human resources could accomplish this.”
Timothy Conway & Guru-Ratings Sarlo:
Again basking in his self-promotion, Timothy Conway cited Sarlo (owner of the GuruRatings WebSite And Yahoo Group) as a notable person on his behalf. Tim Conway put the following quote from Sarlo on his enlightened-spirituality.org website:
“Timothy, you have a lot of ‘engaging’ things to say and it’s been my pleasure to post some of it [e.g., the Sun magazine interview on ‘Engaged Spirituality’ at the Guru Ratings website]. It’s great to learn you have a website now--it looks excellent and broad, already well developed, lots of good news. I'll be happy to list you and link to your site. And i’ll announce it on my discussion forum. And if you don't mind, i’ll link also to your ‘Warning signs of dysfunctional cults’ and ‘Criteria for Authentic Spiritual Realization’ pages from my ‘Other Approaches to Ratings Criteria’ page at www.globalserve.net/~sarlo/Critexpo2.htm, with a few samples. Your signs and criteria would be a worthy addition. --Sarlo, creator of the much-visited ‘Guru Ratings’ website at www.globalserve.net/~sarlo/Ratings.htm.”

For starters, Sarlo (who, for some mysterious reason, does not divulge his full name) is a Rajneesh / Osho devotee (and refers to him as “my Master”), started his spiritual journey (and had a decade-long love affair) with LSD and marijuana (Reference) and refers to himself as “Swami Deva Sarlo” (claiming he is a “master”, initiate and a “god”). “Swami” means ‘master’ (a title usually conferred on initiates belonging to the Osho cult) and “deva” means ‘god’, ‘angel’ or ‘divine being’.
Like Jody, Sarlo believes that he is self-realized. As a matter of fact, in an article entitled “Sarlo Declares Enlightenment”, he said:
Gururatings Sarlo: “According to Osho, one of the biggest obstacles to enlightenment is peer-group jealousy. One’s friends will simply not accept that this trippy asshole has arrived at the ultimate fulfillment while they languish in darkness. I am prepared to meet this challenge head-on. The courage to brave my friends’ scorn has been bolstered by: a) the knowledge, from Phil 101, that you don’t exist; b) end-of-millennium urgency; c) the discovery of ordinariness as a way out/cover-up; d) any or all of the above.” (Reference)
Sarlo is also a contact for an Osho-related center in Canada:

One should rightly wonder why Rajneesh/Osho is listed on Sarlo’s subjective Guru-Ratings website as being one of the greatest Gurus ever to walk the Earth. I think there are many people who would take issue with such a claim. As a matter of fact, many people already have (Refs: 01 - 02 - 03 - 04 - 05 - 06 - 07).
Sarlo praised Jody’s Guruphiliac Blog as a “worthy project” and that he puts “the humourous bite on the usual guru excesses: money, sex, and power”. Ironically, Rajneesh’s excesses in money, sex and power are unparalleled in Gurudom (remember the 93 Rolls Royces?). Needless to say, Sarlo ignores the faults and failings of Osho (his “Master”) and ranks him as one of the greatest Gurus ever to walk the planet. Sarlo then has the audacity to point his self-righteous fingers at other Gurus and whine, snivel and lament about their faults and failings. Funny enough, Sarlo created a disclaimer page where he admitted that his bogus Guru-Ratings service is based on the subjective opinions of a layman (Reference).
So what did Jody Radzik have to say about Rajneesh/Osho? On his Guruphiliac Blog, Jody said:
Guruphliac Jody Radzik: “A tip of our tantric hat to Osho for his attempts to sustain such a large chakra-puja. Such wide scale transgression was certain to result in all kinds of transformation in the participants...But he had management problems and it all fell apart. We're sorry we missed the fun.” (Reference)
Jody Radzik praised Osho’s sexual excesses as a large “chakra puja” (which is a tantric ritual that involves two to ten couples who engage in ritualized sexual activities, aka “an orgy”), dismissed Osho’s many faults and failings as “management problems” and expressed regret that he missed the fun! That’s right, sexual promiscuity, power-abuse, wealth and hedonism are things that Jody Radzik and Sarlo think are laudable, praiseworthy and serve as valid criteria to give high-ranking marks to Gurus whose feet they happen to kiss and adore. It is amusing that Jody and Sarlo both profess devotion to Gurus, yet trash and bash other Gurus as if they are free from the Guru-affliction they love to point out in others.
Amusingly, Timothy Conway wrote a highly critical article about Sarlo’s Guru, Rajneesh. Timothy Conway said he was under the impression that:
“Rajneesh was another shooting star in the spiritual firmament, one of those strange but rather numerous fallen yogis who attain some glimpses or periods of a certain kind of ‘enlightened freedom,’ open up to become a channel for some unusual and palpable energies (leading mesmerized disciples to think they are in the presence of Divinity), but then sooner or later such figures become imbalanced and egocentrically full of themselves--proud, megalomaniacal, narcissistic, and/or disturbed by one or more other mental-emotional-psychic pathologies.“ (Reference)
Attempting to get some cheap publicity on the Guruphiliac Blog and on the GuruRatings Website, Timothy Conway endorses, promotes and associates himself with Jody Radzik and Sarlo. Mr Conway found Sarlo and Jody to so respectable, he listed their names and comments on his official website beside those of Jeff Eisen, Swami Abhayananda (Stan Trout), Steve Beckow, Dr. Peter Rohr, Mike Newton and Stuart Goodnick.
Timothy Conway PhD - The True Believer:
Although Timothy Conway can often be seen attempting to present himself as a rational and logical voice against Sathya Sai Baba, he is a true believer and promoter of Gurus [3], Mystics [3], Enlightened Masters [3], psychics [1] [2] [4], levitation [5], bi-location [5], miracles [5], remote-viewing [4], elementals, meditation [2] [6], paranormal powers [5], aliens [4] [10], rebirth [1] [7], reincarnation [1] [7], karma [8], oracles [2], I-Ching [2], sensitives [1] [2], channelers [1] [2], astrology [2], astrologists [2], palm-reading [2], non-duality [9], etc. (the list goes on and on).
For example, if you are looking for an answer to a difficult problem, Timothy Conway PhD suggested the following solutions:
“Ask God (Spirit, the one God-Self) for guidance and for some kind of ‘omen’ or ‘sign,’ if needed, to proceed in a certain direction (i.e., making choice A, B, C or whatever). Be willing to wait several days or weeks (or, in some cases, months or even years for this guidance to manifest)...Use an oracle, such as the I Ching (Book of Changes). More simply, you can ask for Divine Guidance and then flip a coin--with heads meaning one choice, tails meaning the other choice. If you like, flip it 10 times and see if a clear pattern emerges. You might say, ‘Well, how the coin flips is simply due to chance.’ Perhaps. But one can also trust that there is a deeper Principle behind everything that happens, and you can ask this Divine Guiding Intelligence to show you an answer via the coin-tossing process. Alternatively, you can create a slightly more sophisticated oracle of your own by getting out 3 or 4 pieces of paper. Then write ‘yes’ on one, ‘no’ on another, ‘wait’ on a third piece of paper, and, if you like, ‘wrong question’ on the fourth piece of paper. Then turn them face down, scramble them up, and pick one of the 3 or 4 pieces of paper to get guidance this way...You can also consult a psychic ‘sensitive’ and/or an astrologer or a palmist (Indian jyotish astrology followed by Western astrology seem to be the most accurate astrology systems. And, curiously, palmistry and astrology seem to complement each other as different methods for getting to the same ‘karmic’ information on the soul’s mission, destiny, strengths and vulnerabilities).” (Reference)

It would not surprise me if Timothy Conway flipped coins, tossed papers or consulted the I Ching to formulate his opinions about Sathya Sai Baba.
Timothy Conway cannot take a consistent position for or against Sai Baba. For example, Timothy Conway had the following to say about Sathya Sai Baba and his alleged paranormal powers:
- Timothy Conway: “ I remain convinced that there are paranormal miracles (wondrous anomalies), and ‘deep, mysterious energies,’ perhaps involving multi-dimensional physics and paranormal or supra-normal power, that are occurring around and through the personality of Sathya Sai Baba.”
- Timothy Conway: “Sathya Sai could be an amazingly accomplished but fallen yogi (yogabhrashta)...”
- Timothy Conway: “We should also be aware that these energies and powers could be coming from Sai Baba of Shirdi and/or the Divine Absolute...”
- Timothy Conway: “Perhaps he is just a highly adept but fallen yogi or an inter-dimensionally powerful but contaminated ‘channel’ for the former Sai Baba of Shirdi (d.1918).”
- Timothy Conway: “the powers of someone who has some ‘elemental spirits’ or other entities helping him from interdimensional planes? (–no joke: it’s a very old, worldwide knowledge that one can derive certain powers by contacting such entities).” Ref: Conway Email No. 8.
- Timothy Conway: “Now, a purna avatar would, it seems, incarnate the totality of God, including the polarity play of light-dark, purity-mischief, unattachment-lust, and so on. This is a disturbing concept, but perhaps quite applicable to Baba’s controversial activity. Moreover, the sexual activity, which we now know to apparently involve considerable lust, might be Baba’s way of transmuting the very heavy sexual energy among humanity at this time on the planet.”
- Timothy Conway: “I have sometimes thought that Sai is lustfully ‘taking on’ (on a psychic level) the lust of humanity to clear our sexual karma.”
- Timothy Conway: “I grant that much or most of Baba’s spectacular mission has been about teaching and demonstrating Love.”
- Timothy Conway: “I do believe that there has been an astonishing amount of genuine goodness, compassion and spiritual upliftment in and around Baba.”
Timothy Conway also believed and endorsed (Ref) the alleged experiences of Shirlи Klein-Carsh, a so-called “Indigo” (an alleged extraterrestrial alien that voluntarily incarnates on Earth). Shirlи Klein-Carsh claimed she was psychologically, spiritually and artistically guided by a cleverly disguised alien from Sirius (the star in the constellation of Canis Major) who worked as an electronics repairman in a second-hand shop. Timothy Conway said:
“This is a fascinating study of someone with sensitivities hardly dreamed of by most persons. Other books present the carefully presented and reasoned case for the existence of inter-dimensional aliens interacting with humans. This book goes straight into the mystery and wonder of the human-alien contact.” - Timothy Conway, PhD., author of ‘Women of Power and Grace’
Furthering his alien and UFO beliefs, Timothy Conway attempted to argue that if Sai Baba possesses paranormal powers, he could easily “warp spacetime” by creating an “insular interdimensional environment” where he could engage in abuse without easy detection. Attempting to bolster this asinine argument, Timothy Conway argued that people who are abducted by aliens and who experience the “missing time” phenomenon, have been lifted, transported and relocated to other areas without their spouses being aware of anything amiss. That’s right, Timothy Conway believes that it is possible that Sai Baba molested alleged victims on another dimension, which is why it is so difficult for them to prove their allegations and why there is an abysmal lack of witnesses supporting their claims (Ref: Conway Email No. 10).
These are the amusing beliefs held by a PhD who attempts to take a sober and rational position against Sathya Sai Baba. Timothy Conway and Ex-Devotees are gullible people who immediately jump to the worse case conspiratorial view and adamantly refuse to coherently and legitimately provide factual and verifiable information to support their smear campaigns against Sathya Sai Baba.
